The idea of a physical one world seemed to be a distant dream a few decades ago. But with advancement that we have seen in the field of science and technology has made sure that it does not stay a dream. While it might not be possible to have a real world with no boundaries in near future but it has certainly become possible in the form of the virtual world by the advent of internet. Internet and web have made it easy to communicate within seconds with people on other side of the world. So, if we think about it internet is a world with boundaries that allows people to connect, share information and retrieve information from its vast resources.

Messages reach people in a blink of an eye. News, media, social networking sites have already allowed the freedom of expression. Internet knowledge base is so advanced that people can find information related to any topic and with hardly any cost.

One of the wonderful things about web and internet is the creation of search engines. A search engine works like a catalog in a physical library.

One must have know-how to a certain extent of how search engines retrieve information and what tricks can be used for fast and correct retrieval of information. Information is plenty but sifting the right information is the tricky part.

But again, searching the web via search engines is the 'in' thing these days because it saves time and web engines are up to date with the latest technology and advancements in different subjects in the world.

Before I go into describing a few tricks on using search engines to collect information, I would like to say a few things about the working of search engines. No one knows which algorithm search engines use to bring back results since most search engines are secretive about the techniques they use to search the web.

However, we do know a few patterns the search engines use such as they pick websites or articles base on keyword the user has entered and if it exists in the website with certain density, the search engines bring back the results for the users. Similarly, the search engines are less impressed by graphics and focus more on the relevant information on the site.

Search engines use keywords written by user in their search and compare exact matches and the density at which they appear on a web page. The density measure varies from search engine to search engine. However, while searching make sure you use 'plus' operator instead of 'and' and try not to use prepositions, articles or helping verbs and search engines ignore that.

Always use short words in your searches. Never use whole sentences and search engine tend to ignore certain words like prepositions, articles and helping verbs. Use a 'plus" sign operator instead which usually signifies 'and'.

You will need to practice a bit before you can totally grasp the ways of searching web via search engines. Also, run your searches on more than one search engine against the same keywords to check which one contains the most relevant information for your query.

Remember, not everything on internet is authentic. Before using any information gathered through searching the web via search engines, check the authenticity of sources. Not to mention check the credentials of the author quoting. It is just like going to a library and looking for correct and authentic resources. Happy surfing!
