Desktop Computers - So you want to buy a new desktop computer, but you're not quite sure how to do it. That's understandable, because sometimes it can be very difficult to make a decision. The first thing you're going to need to do is assess your needs. What Do You Need? You need to determine what sort of things you are going to be doing on your machine. Are you going to be using video editing software? 3D Modeling? What about games? These are all different applications, and each one will call for different hardware. The hardware you'll need - Let's say, for example, that you're going to be doing 3-D modelling. In that case, you'll need to make sure you get the right video card. For example, if you have a modeling workstation, it would be a mistake to get a gaming card. In many cases, the video card series by Nvidia Quadro is one good choice. However, if you spend the bulk of your time editing video and doing gaming, you'll want something more in the mainstream. What if you want to do something completely different, though? For example, if you're only going to be using your desktop PC for word processing, then you can go quite a bit simpler. If you're a gamer, you still may be able to get away with a basic desktop PC, since you can play your video games on a console without need of a resources-hogging graphics card. The Price - Desktop computers are fairly cheap, you can either buy one from a major manufacturer, or you can have one built for you. If you were just wanting a basic computer, then you can expect to pay around 343 EUR. Definitely a good price if you just want to use the internet. If a laptop computer is the way to go for you, you should know that they're a little more complicated than a desktop PC. For one thing, they're not upgradeable, for the most part. Network cards and video cards are built right into the board, which means that if something goes wrong, you have to replace the entire board; in some cases you may get lucky in that your cards will be standalone, but that's not common. In most cases, you won't be able to replace inadequate or the wrong types of cards without replacing the entire board, so make sure you get the right computer straight off the bat. When it comes to buying a laptop computer, it's pretty much the same as buying a desktop PC, except that you have more choices. If you just want a good basic workhorse type of computer, you probably already know what type of hardware you'll want. You'll need very good graphics and the largest hard drive you can buy within reason. And if you want something that you're just going to use to surf the Internet, you've got it pretty easy. Netbooks are the new web surfing workhorses. These small computers have the ability to surf the web, though not much else. They typically do not have an optical drive, which explains their low price. The price on a netbook can raise a little if you choose to have a solid state hard drive. For a standard laptop with all the extras you might end up paying 825 EUR, but for a netbook you might pay around 130 EUR. It all depends on what you need.
