Puzzle games go back a long way in history, all the way back to the 1700's to be exact. The very first jigsaw puzzle was formed in 1760 by a man named John Spilsbury. In its early stages it was used as a tool to teach geography and not a game. It was utilized in this context until the 1800's.

In the early part of the 20th century the newspapers realized they could draw in more readers and subscriptions by publishing puzzles in the paper. The Sunday crossword is still prevalent at present with many people as they drink their morning coffee.

Popular puzzle game inventors include Martin Gardner, Will Shortz and Sam Loyd. These are some of the more identifiable names in the industry. But there are dozens of others that could be included on this list.

Martin Gardner, the man who apparently coined the term "mathemagician", ran the "Mathematical Games" column from 1956 to 1981. He published over 70 books in addition to all this.

Will Shortz worked for Penny Press Magazine then as an editor for Games Magazine during which he founded the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament in 1978. In 1992 he turned around and also founded the World Puzzle Championship and became the director of the United States Puzzle Team.

Sam Loyd is possibly the more famed of the three listed here. He is most remembered as a chess player and at one time was ranked 15th in the world. He appreciated the game of chess and often produced chess puzzles with amusing themes to them. His adoration for puzzles did bring about one fault in his chess playing abilities though. Instead of using uncomplicated moves in an attempt to win a chess game he preferred to create uncommon combination's of moves across the board. Before his death in 1911 he also claimed to have been the originator of the "fifteen puzzle" although experts say it was just an revision of an older puzzle instead.

Puzzle have been so popular for so many years that nowadays we see them as the encouragement for several video games. Tetris and Resident Evil are both exceedingly popular video games that are puzzle based. Letter and word games are also used normally in school systems as teaching tools and have proven quite effectual in doing so.
