Since the NBA Finals against the Miami Heat in 06' the Mavs haven't really been the same. The Mavs have suffered disappointing playoffs losses and have yet to win a championship despite owner Mark Cuban's best efforts. The Mavs have fallen back the last couple seasons - they were once the frontrunner in the West but now have become an average team. It wasn't too long ago they were going deep into the playoffs. In 06, the Mavs were up two games on the Miami Heat then lost 4 games in a row. The Mavs did rebound a season later with an outstanding record of 67-15, only to lose in the first round. The Mavericks have had an extremely eventful off season, highlighted by some big name signings that may have a profound impact on the team. Mark Cuban is a very unique owner in that he is seen just as much as his players are. Whether this hurts or helps his team win basketball games is uncertain - what is does show is that he cares a great deal about his team and tries to do what's best for them. Drew Gooden will be a big presence in the paint for Dallas. One of the Dallas Mavericks' weakest points in recent years has been rebounding. Gooden should help in this area with his size, 6'10 and 250lbs. Shawn Marion has been on a few teams as of late but hopefully he can find success on the Mavs. Marion is a very good player who should give the Mavs another scoring threat. This will help open things up for Dirk. As a result, this is a Mavericks team that the Lakers and Spurs have both publicly spoken praises for. Many pre-season power rankings have the Mavericks at #2 or 3 in the Western Conference, and with good reason. This is a talented team of experienced basketball players.
