In layman's terms, a lucid dream is a dream you have where you are actually aware of the fact that you're busy having a dream. The term 'lucid' simply refers to being aware or conscious, and of course the full extent of your lucidity depends largely on your actual dream experience, together with the amount of detail you are able to remember when you wake up, and of course, the level of control you had over the dream.
It is this last point which is by all accounts the most astounding quality of a lucid dream, given that you are actually able to identify the fact that you're busy having a dream. Is it not remarkable that one can actually control the direction of your dream, and that you're not restricted in any way whatsoever? Just for a moment to try and imagine what it must feel like, bearing in mind that by all accounts it feels, looks, and sounds exactly like a real life situation. However, the difference is, it's only a dream. Unlike in the real world, one is not restricted by rules and regulations, and neither can one become injured and die in a lucid dream. The bottom line is; a lucid dream is yours. It is your personal virtual reality, and you can be rest assured that even the most sophisticated computers in the world can't provide you with anything similar. As anyone who experiences lucid dreaming can attest to, it is simply an incredible skill and it's of little wonder that so many people are now beginning to show an interest. Admittedly, practically everyone will at some stage experience a lucid dream but can you imagine being able to enjoy one whenever you wish? Many people tend to describe a lucid dream as being a doorway or gateway to the most wonderful experiences imaginable. In fact when you have a lucid dream and you're able to control it, you can then head off to any place you wish, whether you choose to go and meet your favorite celebrities, or whether you choose to go and visit loved ones which are no longer here with you. The amazing thing is you are only limited by your own imagination. Unlike in the past, experiencing lucid dreams on a regular basis is no longer as complicated as what it once was. Admittedly, people often had to spend months at a time receiving instruction and learning how to condition themselves before they could experience lucid dreaming. Even then, while some managed to achieve a certain degree of success, others simply failed miserably. Are there any quick and easy ways to experience a lucid dream? Interestingly enough, there are many people who believe certain foods such as orange juice, cheese, milk, and mustard, have the ability to help induce a lucid dream, providing they are consumed immediately before you lie down to sleep. Fish, pickles, popcorn, and ice cream have also been mentioned. Even though these foods don't seem to compare with those mentioned above, many people do claim that these help to improve dream recall. Unfortunately for many people who may be on a diet, all the foods just mentioned contain a lot of sugar, salt, and fat, none of which are known to promote a good night's sleep. Is technology able to help? In the not too distant past this would have been virtually impossible, although modern technology is now able to assist one with regards to lucidity. Interestingly enough, there are now certain devices which have the ability to recognize REM (rapid eye movement) and when they do, they respond with a blinking red diode in order to stimulate and induce a lucid dream. By integrating the red beam of light with the dream, a person is reminded of the fact that they're having a dream and as such, they can then try to control it. Furthermore, there have recently been some astounding developments with regards to sound technology. In fact, these developments have to a great extent made lucid dreaming possible for one and all. A process which uses binaural beats has recently been developed by scientists. This process involves playing sound at different frequencies into each ear. Essentially, this process helps to synchronize the two hemispheres of the human brain. Furthermore, once listening begins, rapid eye movement is almost instantaneous, thus paving the way for a lucid dream. Of course, what works for one doesn't necessarily work for another, but you can be rest assured that if you're interested in learning how to master the art of lucid dreaming, then this is by far the most reliable method available.
