Ballet is an amazing form of dancing. It's more than just a dance style however, it's an art form. It has technical movements and footwork that must be executed with precision and mastery, yet at the same time, it has to convey a sense of emotion that blends naturally with the music which accompanies the dance. Consequently the best ballet dancers don't just have dancing skills; they are also accomplished in mime, singing and acting.

It was back in the mid 1600s that ballet first caught the attention of the French court, and in particular King Louis XVI. Although the Italians can claim ownership for the birth of ballet, the form in which we know it today came from France. The Academie Royale de Musique et de Danse was founded by King Louis XVI and the popularity of ballet can trace its roots back to that period of history. Throughout the world there are many world class ballet schools, Moscow, London and New York have ballet schools that are particular noteworthy, but the origins of this dance form remain embedded in France, as is shown by the fact that the language of ballet terminology is French!

What is a Ballet Dancer?

There are many varied definitions of what a ballet dancer is. One of the main skills that they need is to possess great poise and grace. Their movements should flow effortlessly from one to another portraying elegance. They should be able to interact silently with the audience, telling a story with their movements and expressions the audience can feel.

Contrary to the stereotype, ballet is not only for women. There are also men who undergo training as ballet dancers. Back in the Renaissance Period, ballet dancers were male dancers dressed up as women. Today, this is not done anymore as ballet has become predominantly female, but there are still men who study ballet. Male ballet dancers are flexible and light in weight but are very strong - enough to lift female dancers throughout the routine.

Ballet dancing is a great way of keeping fit. The amount of training that is involved ensures that a ballet dancer has a well-toned body. Their healthy lifestyle means that they usually have a good metabolism and have above average stamina. The exercises to develop poise means that they stand, walk and sit correctly which means they look confident and don't develop backache from bad posture.

From a one-time crowd entertaining interval of a theatrical play, to capturing the eye of Hollywood in such movies as Billy Elliot, ballet dancing has continued to thrive. While other dance forms come and go, ballet steeped in tradition, enchants generation after generation. The old fashioned discipline and respect that ballet dancers have learned throughout the ages are still taught today, along with the steps created back in King Louis XVI's time - and yet when danced on a stage by professional dancers, they still encompass the magic that is ballet.
