Modern Indie Rock Debut Classic Albums
After nearly a decade of prosperity, the indie music scene has shown no signs of letting up. Intelligent rock music is in, and the number of fans seems to be growing. The last two years have brought us an onslaught of new bands, and I’d like to discuss some of the finest debuts during this span.
While I could easily name 15 or 20 great debuts during the last two years, I’m only going to focus on three during this article. This will require a lot of thought, since so many albums are worthy of mention here.
The three articles that I choose to discuss are all wonderfully crafted albums that all music lovers should listen to. If you’ve never heard of these bands, you’re in for a treat as soon as you do.
First one on my list is Bon Iver’s For Emma, Forever Ago. This is one of the best albums I’ve heard in a long time. The raw emotion conveyed on it and the slow, catchy hooks are truly unique.
This is an album that consists of some great songs from beginning to end. Standout tracks like “Flume”, “Skinny Love”, and others quickly became indie rock staples after the album was released.
If you haven’t heard Vampire Weekend’s self titled debut album, I’d suggest doing so right away. The release is over a year old at this point, but it’s one of the best and most innovative albums I’ve heard in recent memory. This is a must listen if you’re unfamiliar with the band’s work.
The final album on my list my very well be my favorite. If you’re already immersed in the indie world, there’s a very good chance that you’ve already heard last year’s debut album by Fleet Foxes. This was one of the most well received albums of 2008.
These are all instant classics in my mind, and worthy of repeated listens.
