Browsing For A Terrific Film? Check Out These Wonderful Film Opinions
It is a good time to be a movie enthusiast. For scores of years the only way to see a up-to-the-minute show was to go to the theater. After that the video stores came out but there you had to go over there and try to obtain your movie, it was frequently out of stock and if you didn’t get it back on time you had to pay a late fee. Now you can get films by mail but you still have to wait.
The Indian in the Cupboard – A young man (Scardino) acquires an old chest as a birthday present, and finds that when he sets a toy Indian inside and turns the key, the Indian comes to life. Then he sees that the Indian is not a toy, but a real individual. Problems follow, particularly while his best playmate brings to life a toy cowboy. Cast includes Hal Scardino, Lindsay Crouse, Richard Jenkins, Rishi Bhat, and Nestor Serrano. (96 minutes,’95)
Like Water for Chocolate – Striking and intense film from a book by Laura Esquivel set in the early part of the 20th century – a youthful female’s life is conditioned by her solemn and unyielding mom, who treats her terribly. Sumptuous tale, not without humor, with an excellent cast and a top of the line performance from lead actress Cavazos. Cast includes Lumi Cavazos, Marco Leonardi, Regina Tome, Mario Ivan Martinez, and Ada Carrasco. (113 minutes,’92)
The Night of the Iguana – Trudging premise based on Tennessee Williams play. Recovered alcoholic clergyman Burton, a bus-journey guide in Mexico, becomes involved with Kerr, Gardner, and Lyon. Dorothy Jeakins won an Oscar for her costumes. Cast includes Richard Burton, Deborah Kerr, Ava Gardner, Sue Lyon, Skip Ward, Grayson Chamber, and Cyril Delevanti. (118 minutes,’64)
Mysterious Lady – An Austrian armed forces officer (Nagel) falls in love with Garbo, clueless that she’s a Russian agent. Another artificial plot made serviceable by Garbo herself. Cast includes Greta Garbo, Conrad Nagel, Gustav von Seyffertitz, Albert Pollet, and Edward Connelly. (96 minutes,’28)
Inferno – American returns to New York from school in Rome to explore the hideous death of his sibling, and finds “sinister moms” inflicting paranormal disorder on both sides of Atlantic. Surreal, spellbinding shocker by Italian terror genius Argento does not make much sense, but it has a lot of style. Cast includes Leigh McCloskey, Irene Marvel, Sacha Pitoeff, Daria Nicolodi, Eleonora Giorgi, Veronica Lazar, and Alida Valli. (107 minutes,’84)
Far and Away – A scrappy Irish occupant farmer hooks up, in doubtful style, with the equally energetic daughter of a wealthy landowner, and together they journey to America to hunt for their final destiny in the’93 Oklahoma land rush. Outstanding platform for Tom and Nicole, who are both good-looking and involving; the trouble is a drastic lack of decent dialogue to fill the gaps between fight scenes. Cast includes Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Thomas Gibson, Robert Prosky, Barbara Babcock, Cohn Meaney, and Rance Howard. (140 minutes,’92)
